Laurie's Table Talk Recap - Doris DeeDee Cutler
Wow! It’s been almost a week since the very first live recording of Laurie’s Table Talk. It was so IMPACTFUL. And, I’m not just saying this because I am the host. It was indeed an educational and encouraging dialogue about how I survived my domestic violence situation.
There are many types of domestic violence scenarios. Mines just so happened to involve emotional and economic abuse. We don’t always hear or think about those sorts of situations categorized as “violence,” but it is. Any kind of aggressive, manipulative, or forceful behavior in a relationship is violence because it threatens your mental, physical and emotional safety.
When I was going through that scenario in my life, I was so lost and confused. How is this happening to me? Of all people. Domestic violence can happen to anyone at any time and how you recover is by getting through it.
One meaningful way I got through it was by leaning on members of my tribe and seeking help for things I did not understand. As I wrote in “As My Leaders Go… So Do I,” "One of the people I spoke to often during this time was DeeDee Cutler, a retired police officer. DeeDee was my consultant in the process of dealing with the legal system, and I leaned in and learned all that I could about 'how it's done' and did it."
DeeDee was there for me when I have questions, I wanted to scream, I wanted to cry, and when I wanted to punch a wall. She sacrificed a lot of her time to support and coach me through survival. She frankly “talked me off the ledge” some days.
One of the things DeeDee shared during Laurie’s Table Talk is, “if you are unfamiliar with the Commissioners Office and the court system and you find yourself in a situation where you have to navigate it, talk to someone that is. DO NOT try to do it alone. There are resources and people in place to help you.
It can be exhausting. There were some days when I wanted to give up, but DeeDee kept me in the fight. If you start the process, finish it. See it to the end because while it may be uncomfortable at the moment, peace is on the other side. One of the things I learned is that once you start the process, you must remain consistent in your action to seek justice. Many people start but stop out of exhaustion, confusion, or even fear. I am here to tell you; you can do it!
Do you want to know how uncomfortable I was during this time? I vacated my home, not of my own will but for my safety and sanity. I stayed at five or six different homes during my process for six months. But, every day, thanks to my tribe, I woke up went to my office to operate as President and CEO of a company I was building. How did I do it? I knew all I had to do was just get through. As my pastor has said, “don’t just sit there and grab a cigarette while you are in hell.” Get up and fight!
